WHY ARE SMALL GROUPS A BIG DEAL?
Posted: September 1, 2011 in Faith, Life, Ministry, People, SpiritualityLast night at REVOLUTION, we launched something big, something exciting, something fun, something that has been prayed over, something that has been researched, something that will take REVOLUTION to a whole new level, and something that will change lives.
Last night, we launched REVgroups – the new, improved, remixed small groups for REVOLUTION Student Ministry.
Relationships are very important to us here at REVOLUTION. We think every single person should feel they belong. Of any place on the planet, the church should be a place for everyone to belong (by the way, that includes YOU). It doesn’t matter what you’ve done in the past, what your reputation is, what car you drive, how much money you have, what social circle you run around in, or who you’re family is…you belong.
If you have a pulse, you belong at church.
Wednesday night at REVOLUTION is fun, crazy, loud, over-the-top, creative, and energetic. Every week, you will find hundreds of students, loud rocking music, lots of laughing, and creative, relevant messages over things students face every single day. These Wednesday night big group experiences are made for students and their friends to encounter God.
But we need more. We were created for more than just the big group experience. That’s where REVgroups (our small groups) come in.
If your church/ministry has small groups (could be called growth groups, cell groups, connect groups, etc), I highly encourage you to get involved because small groups are a big deal.
Why are small groups a big deal?
Small groups are BIBLICAL. If you open up the New Testament to the book of Acts, you will see the start of what we call “the church”. The church grew at an amazing rate during its first few years. In Acts 2, we see 3000+ people get saved in one day. What did they do with all these people? How did all these thousands and thousands of people fit in? Yep, small groups. Check out passages like Acts 2:42-47 and Acts 5:42. They talk about meeting together in each other’s homes every day of the week, sharing everything, eating together, meeting the needs, and living life together.
Small groups help us CONNECT. John 15 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible. It is a huge metaphor of a tree. It simply states that if a branch (that represents you) is connected to the tree (that represents God), than the branch will bear fruit. However, if a branch is not connected to the tree, then the branch will fall off, shrivel up, and die. Some people come to church every week and love the big group experience, but never really connect to the church. I’ve seen too many people walk into church loving the experiences only to walk out shortly after. It’s too easy to feel alone in a crowd. Small groups are a way for you to connect and do live with others.
Small groups help us GROW. I personally promise and guarantee that small groups will help you grow. You will grow in maturity, in relationships (with God and with others), and in commitment. Proverbs 27:17 tells us “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” In small groups, you will grow like never before.
Small groups provide SUPPORT. Imagine someone you can call when you’re discouraged, someone to pray with when you are face-to-face with doubt, and someone who can teach you more about who God is. Imagine a group of people who notice when you’re not there, who make you a better person, and who help you share your faith with others. Imagine a group of people who believe in you. Small groups are a place where you will find support.
Finally…
Small groups are a CHOICE. Nobody will ever force you to be in a small group. You have got to make a choice. We can all make excuses why not to be in a small group – don’t have time, can’t trust others, commitment issues, etc. Here’s the bottom line: do you want to grow in your relationship with God and with others like never before?
I’m so excited to announce that REVOLUTION will be launching 16 brand new REVgroups in the next few weeks. These groups will meet every week this semester. There are high school groups (guys only, girls only, and co-ed). There are middle school groups (guys only, girls only, and co-ed). We will have groups meeting every single day of the week.
REVgroups are going to be amazing.
