It is time for a change.
It is time to finally upgrade to the latest generation of video game consoles. The Xbox is simply not cutting it anymore. It makes weird noises. It never has new games (because they stopped making Xbox games).
Don’t worry, the Super Nintendo is still going strong. It doesn’t get much better than playing the 16-bit SNES on my 46-inch Samsung LCD TV. However, the SNES is a classic that must be taken care of and not overused.
It’s time for a change.
But I need your help. Which video game console should I upgrade to – Xbox 360, Wii, or PS3?
Here are some things you need to know before you give your opinion…
- I almost exclusively play sports games (Madden and baseball).
- I like to play video games occasionally to unwind and relax.
- I generally play video games by myself.
- I am a youth pastor, so upgrading to the newest video game console was inevitable.
- I already have a blueray player.
- I could care less about online gaming.
- I workout a lot and don’t want to literally play 18 holes of golf at 11:30pm when I am trying to unwind.
Knowing those things, which video game console should I upgrade to – Xbox 360, Wii, or PS3? Tell me which one I should get and the reasons why.

I would say that the Xbox 360 is your best bet because it is powerful so the graphics are the step forward, although like the PS3 the xbox 360 is a heat titan and can get hot and noisy.
I would have picked the Wii but you don’t want to literally play golf
.
If you’re mostly playing alone, that’s enough of a reason not to get a Wii – beyond a few first party titles, it’s almost exclusively a casual party console. A love of sports games definitely pushes you into 360 or PS3 territory. Between the 360 and PS3, since you’ve already got a blu-ray player and don’t care about online experience, it’s going to come down to the exclusive titles. Sports games are always multi-platform, so that’s no issue. Look at these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_3_games
See, of the exclusive titles (marked by the green YES), which system has more of the style of games you enjoy.
For reference, I’ve got a Wii + 360 and my roommate has a PS3. The Wii almost never gets touched except when we get a hankering for Super Smash. The other two are fairly equal, but I tend to favor the 360 personally.
being a 360 owner and trying to be unbiased i would say a 360 is your best bet. ps3 is good but playstation network cant even com close to xbox live. ppl say its free so its better, well its not, and if you have played both like i have you can se which one is better. the only think a ps3 has hat an xbox doesnt is blueray which is pretty much HD which xbox has. Wii is god too, but it has limited games that are worth playing. but if you dont mind paying 20 buck for 3 months of online for xbox, go for it.
Couple clarifications to this:
-You can pay $50 annually for Xbox Live, $8 for a month, or $20 for 3 months
-”blueray which is pretty much HD” – I don’t think you understand what happened with this. Blu-ray™ and HD DVD™ were two separate formats and had battled it out to see who would become the next standard high definition format. Sony backed Blu-ray™ and included the player, while Microsoft backed HD DVD™ and created an add-on player. In the end, Blu-ray™ won and HD DVD™ ceased production completely, meaning PS3 is the only console able to play the high definition disk format.
Brian,
I have a PS3 and a Wii. The Wii really never gets played unless some teens are over to play Tiger Woods golf or Mario Kart. I like it, but the huge downside to the Wii is that it is not in HD. Like you, I have a big nice TV and it is always disappointing that the Wii is not HD. It looks good, don’t get me wrong, but 480i is a big drop off from 780 and 1080p.
Now the PS3 is incredible. I have one of the big old ones, not the new cheaper, more GB, and smaller new ones. The reason I went PS3 is that the exclusive titles that I love, Metal Gear Solid series, God of War series, and a few others are on PS3 only. Other than those few titles I play sports games like you, so it doesn’t matter which next-gen console you have for sports games. One big thing, and I know you said you aren’t worried about playing online, but having an internet connected system is a must these days for uploading new software and downloading lots of great extras for games that you buy. Now the PS3 has a built in wireless connector. The 360 doesn’t and the wireless adapter is like $120 extra. So to me that is important and I don’t play online. Another positive to the PS3, in my opinion, is it’s media storage and uses. It stores videos, pictures, etc. in a better way than the 360. Plus it has a great internet browser if you feel like browsing the web from you seat after a game on you big ol’ TV.
Just my opinion. But definitely look at games you might play outside of sports games and see which system has titles that you like better.
But since you are a Xbox guy already, not having to learn a new control scheme for everything is a plus to go with a 360. Another reason I went PS2 to PS3 is because the controller was the same, and I prefer it to the crazy Xbox controllers.
Good luck
