REVOLUTION

Wednesdays, 7-8:15pm, all November & December

NORTHchurch

The message of Jesus is as simple and concise as the song many of us learned and sang in preschool: Jesus loves me, this I know.

Me.

You.

Practically everyone knows that little ditty.

But many don’t know its truth and power. The first two words do not inspire a lot of emotion. “Jesus loves.” It is when one gets to the “me,” the “you,” that things get more complicated.

Jesus Loves You.

The all-encompassing “you” means that the love of Jesus leaves no one out.

Let that sink in. Jesus loves you. With all your issues. With all your mess ups. With all your messiness. With all your quirks. Jesus loves you.

Rest in that fact today.

It’s time for your 2009 World Series predictions…

  1. Who is going to win the 2009 World Series – New York Yankees or Philadelphia Phillies?
  2. How many games will it take that team to win?
  3. Who will be the 2009 World Series MVP (most valuable player)?

MY PREDICTIONS…

  1. New York Yankees (surprise, surprise) win the 2009 World Series.
  2. They win in 5 games.
  3. C.C. Sabathia will be the World Series MVP.

Yes, it is time for me to earn some more points to my man card. There is no better way to do that than by participating in “No Shave November” and growing a manly beard.

No Shave November is as simple as it sounds. All NSN consists of is picking a part of your body you normally shave and do not shave that area for the month of November. No Shave November is not gender biased. Women are encouraged as well as men in participating in this awesome month-long journey. It is not a competition. So if you know you have patchy, inconsistent facial hair that might be considered weak, you have nothing to worry about. Let it grow proudly. No Shave November is all about giving our Mach 3s, Venuses, Fusions, Quattros, Norelcos, and Remingtons a well-deserved break for one month.

I participated in No Shave November for the first time in 2007 and it was awesome. It was my first time to sport a beard and I promised myself that it would not be my last time. I hope to grow a fuller, thicker, more manlier beard this year.

In 2008, I kept a daily record of my No Shave November experiment (not on the blog because that would have been super boring for you, thus guaranteeing the loss of all my consistent readers) and posted sporadic updates on how the beard was coming. My goal was to take a picture everyday at the same spot, mesh all the pictures together, and make a sweet animation video of my beard growing before your very eyes.

Here is my No Shave November 2008 video…

So are you going to join me in participating in No Shave November 2009?

Men, are you going to join me in rocking the best beard you can grow in 30 days? Women, are you going to join me in letting your legs, your armpits, one leg/one armpit, or even a patch on your knees grow free for 30 days? Those of you that may have some rules and regulations about facial hair in your school or workplace, let me encourage you to grow something in the spirit of NSN. If you go to school where you can only have sideburns to your ears and hair above your upper lip, then I encourage you to rock the best sideburns and stache that you can for 30 days.

Can I count on you joining the No Shave November army starting November 1?

In honor of being right in the middle of football season, here is a compilation of some of the coolest commercials ever…

Couple of questions…

  • What’s your favorite? (My favorite is Chris Chambers.)
  • Do you think these videos are real or fake?

Do you have more authorities in your life as a child or as an adult?

Listen to these profound words by Andy Stanley in his book The Seven Checkpoints

Most teenagers long for the day when they can move out of the house and be free. Meanwhile those of us who are adults wish they could back! Why? We’ve learned from experience that getting older doesn’t mean having fewer authorities over us. Just the opposite.

Think about it. When you were two years old, who did you have to answer to? When you entered elementary school, who did you have to answer to? When you started middle and high school, who did you have to answer to? Now, as an adult, who do you have to answer to?

The point is simple yet profound: The older you get, the more arenas of life you enter, the more authorities you have. There is only one group for which this is not true: men and women in prison. Their only authority is the warden. But that’s certainly not freedom!

The human heart has a tendency to cry, “I don’t want anybody telling me what to do!” But authority is a fact of life. It isn’t going away. We can either help students learn to live with it and benefit from it or continue to watch as student after student chooses to resist authority and lose whatever freedom they have.

That’s good stuff.

Agree or disagree? Thoughts?

Two major things are happening to me this week:

On Thursday, Heather and I will be buying a house. I have not said much about our house on the blog because there are so many things that can interrupt the process. I wanted to make sure that it was a done deal before I put it out there as public information. We are very excited about this house. We got a great deal. There are a few things that we still need to do to the house before we move in. We hope to be moved in around November 1.

Pictures will be coming soon. Email me if you want the address.

Also…

On Sunday, I will be preaching at the Shannon Oaks Church in Sulphur Springs, Texas. I will be going back to Sulphur Springs on Friday to be in a great friend’s wedding. I hope to take full advantage of the weekend by spending quality time with as many friends and former SOC/SM students as possible, running a few miles with my old running buddies, standing beside a great couple as they start their marriage, and preach what God lays on my heart to an amazing church family. Shannon Oaks Church, I am excited to reconnect and be with you this weekend. Invite your friends, neighbors, coworkers, and random strangers and expect God to do big things this Sunday.

help wanted

I need your help. I am doing some research for my message this Wednesday and need you to fill in the blank to this sentence:

I WISH MY PARENTS _____________________________________________.

Please indicate your first name and age with your answer.

Thank you so much in advance for helping me out.

In lieu of tomorrow’s Oklahoma/Texas college football game (that I will be in attendance), I AM SECOND has released three new I AM SECOND videos featuring the starting quarterbacks from each team, Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy.

Enjoy…

jesus loves you this i know

“Jesus loves me this I know. For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong. We are weak but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. The Bible tells me so.”

I just bought a book on Amazon that deals with the same topic as this classic VBS song.

Jesus Loves You this I know is a new book by Craig Gross and Jason Harper. In their words, here is the about the book…

The constant noise of contemporary life makes it easy to miss the most profound message the world has ever known: Jesus loves you. Innovative teachers Craig Gross and Jason Harper will separate the religious from the real as they show how this simple truth is worth our undivided attention. The authors weave Jesus’ narrative with their own stories of serving among the “least of these” in this inspiring summons to world-changing faith. Join them as they encounter shut-ins, drunks, inmates, porn stars, and others while striving to follow Christ in their daily lives.

Here are the chapter titles for Jesus Love You this I know..

Chapter 1 – Jesus Loves the Bitter and Betrayed
Chapter 2 – Jesus Loves the Disconnected
Chapter 3 – Jesus Loves the Broken
Chapter 4 – Jesus Loves the Forgotten
Chapter 5 – Jesus Loves the Skeptic
Chapter 6 – Jesus Loves the Glutton
Chapter 7 – Jesus Loves the Crook
Chapter 8 – Jesus Loves the Outcast
Chapter 9 – Jesus Loves the Porn Star
Chapter 10 – Jesus Loves the Religious

In Matthew 9 Jesus says, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick…For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Challenging, challenging stuff. I am very excited to read this book.
