How Do You Handle Telemarketers?

9 03 2009

I may be in the minority, but I still have a home telephone.

I hardly ever use it to call people.

I hardly ever get called on that phone.

Yet I still pay for it.

90% of my home phone calls are telemarketers. It’s bad. It’s gotten to the point where Heather and I do not want to answer the phone. Last night a telemarketer called at 9pm. 9pm on a Sunday night!  Have any of you experienced this?

My friends, telemarketers have officially crossed the line. We must fight back and defend our home phones before they become a thing of the past.

My sweet wife does not handle telemarketers well. She is too nice. She feels guilty if she cuts a telemarketer off or if she hangs up on one. Heather will never be conned into buying something, but she patiently listens to their pitches way too much.

How do you handle telemarketers? What’s the best, most effective technique?

Is it the HANG UP TECHNIQUE where you hang up the phone without saying a word as soon as you know it is a telemarketer?

Is it the YOU’VE GOT THE WRONG NUMBER TECHNIQUE where you tell the telemarketer that they have the wrong number, wait for them to call back, and simply not answer?

Is it the HE/SHE IS NOT HOME RIGHT NOW TECHNIQUE where you tell the telemarketer that the person they are trying to reach is not home (even if that is you)?

Is it the WAIT PATIENTLY TO SAY NO THANK YOU TECHNIQUE where you wait patiently while the telemarketer goes through their pitch only to politely say “no thank you”?

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!!!

How do you handle telemarketers? What’s the best, most effective technique?

_____________

I personally like this technique…

I signed up on this site and have significantly lower (if not stopped completely) the commercial calls.

Love the Seinfeld clip though.

Brian, I would say on the average we get 10-12 telemarketer calls a day at the office. We have 4 lines and each one that calls will call us on all 4 numbers. The most popular are, “your vehicle warranty is about to expire” and “we need to talk to you about your credit card account” sounding very serious, and then you find out they are trying to hook you up with another card.
Happy and polite is the way way I try to handle all office calls, as well as life in general BUT lately I have found that I have little (or maybe no) patience with these people. Polite seems to be a technique that is not working. I am now using the firm “NO THANK YOU” the minute I am sure it is a sales call. It doesn’t seem to be working either. I am still getting calls every day.

CALLER ID!!! I don’t answer the phone if it’s someone I don’t know. We are also on the DON’T CALL government site. That really helps. It doesn’t stop all telemarketer calls, but it does help. Hope that helps.

Manyo – thanks for that website. Signed up today. I had never heard of that site before.

Linda – you are more patient than you give yourself credit for just because you talk to 10-12 of those people a day.

Sarah – that’s awesome.

Mom – caller ID is more money. Yes, I would know who is calling but in a way I feel that the telemarketers would win by getting me to pay more money a month just to not talk to them. We can’t all be as lucky as you and Dad and have our phone bills payed by the state.

Hey BC…we have caller id so we dont answer the phone. And if we do, I am like Heather I end up letting them give their spill before I say no thanks…and Joseph just says no thanks and hangs up if he picks up the phone. So really I guess it is just who you are when it come to handling them. Good Luck!

Dad and I pay our own/personal phone bill and always have. We don’t even have the state/business line ring at the house. Caller ID only costs a couple of dollars extra a month, and it’s well worth it.

Say, “I need to put you on hold” and then never come back. They quit calling soon.

i have a real player playlist of vintage airchecks and commercials, indespersed with my oldies playlist. i listen t it while online and when the telemarketer calls the phone is right there next to the speaker. i let them have 20 minutes of top 40 radio mixed with ads for edsel, lucky strikes, weather for june 1965 and the latest on what president kennedy is up to. i then hang up. they either think that they’ve entered a time warp or they are just amused. mabye they hang up. i dont know.
