“Yes, I am going to attempt to start blogging. I hope to share a little of my brain with world wide web from time to time. I will try to write from time to time on a variety of subjects…life, faith, family, sports, random, etc. If you know me, then you know that my brain is always going. I think from the time I wake up till the time I go to bed. Let’s see if I can get some of those thoughts out on the world wide web so the entire global civilization with a computer can see them. What a brilliant idea!” – Brian Cromer, March 11, 2008

This is a quote from the first briancromer.com post ever. Nearly 9 months, 248 posts, and over 45,000 visitors later, it’s time to take a look back at the year that was. This is briancromer.com’s Top 10 Blog Posts of 2008. Some of you reading this are newer to the blog and may have missed some of the earlier moments. I invite you to click on the links and enjoy some of the moments that you may have missed. Some of you have been around since day one (Heather & Mom). I invite you to take a stroll down memory lane, maybe take a look at the comments that you have posted. Without further adieu, the Top 10…

#10 GREAT THANKSGIVING STORY – November 28, 2008

This is a story where I got to brag on my incredible wife. This is just a small taste of how amazing she truly is. I seriously am a lucky man and I know it. She is amazing. She is my best friend. And she loves God way more than she could ever love me.

#9 THE 20 WORST FOODS IN AMERICA – April 22, 2008

I love to learn. I also love to share things that I learn with you. This is one of the most interesting, disgusting, yet eye-opening blog posts of 2008. These numbers will astound you.

#8 NO SHAVE NOVEMBER VIDEO – December 1, 2008

Creating and editing videos is one of my least talked about passions. I often wish I had more time to dedicate towards growing more in this creative outlet. I made quite a few videos this years. This one is my favorite. Others from this year include YOUTH MISSIONS SUNDAY VIDEOS, CHINA VIDEO,  & OKLAHOMA CITY VIDEO.

#7 THE MINISTRY OF PRESENCE – March 18, 2008

Anytime I can point out a relevant, Biblical truth while talking about my favorite baseball team, the New York Yankees, it has to be a great post. I really enjoy sports. My TV can often be found on ESPN and I could be what many call obsessed. Other good sports posts include New Favorite Olympic Sport – Handball, Horse Racing Rant, Happy Birthday Josh, Pray for Joba, Incredible Inspirational Story, and What a Debut!

*You also must check out this post – Wal-Mart, Tiger, and Dominance – because I thought it was a very interesting debate about life and sports. If this would have been the Top 11 Blog Posts of 2008, this one would have made the cut.

#6 BREAKS MY HEART – October 15, 2008

Do you understand that culture and media have a significant impact on our lives. I am always interested in taking the messages that are in our culture and holding them up to the standards and teachings of Jesus. This specific post talks about an extremely disturbing commercial I have seen multiple times. This commercial is for a website where married people can have affairs. Other culture posts include 100K Plus People, Public Schools, Picture Reaction, and Frustration with the Word Love.

#5 PIRATING MUSIC – June 4, 2008

This is one of those subjects where God really has convicted me. In today’s world full of ripping CDs, illegal downloads, file sharing, and MP3s, this subject should be taken very seriously as a follower of Jesus.

#4 CHINA BATHROOM SITUATION – July 23, 2008

In a world where funny things and priceless moments happen almost daily, very few of those moments are captured in a picture. This picture was taken while I was in China this summer for 2 weeks. Other great pictures from the year include The Stache, Chicken Feet, Picture Needing a Caption RESULTS, Funny Picture, and Sitting Pretty.

#3 PLAYING CHURCH – December 2, 2008

Yes, I love sports. Yes, I love culture. But my biggest passion is Jesus and his church. Recently God has been stirring a holy discontent when it comes to American church. This post is my attempt at trying to put those holy discontent thoughts and emotions into words. Here are some of my favorite “spiritual” posts of 2008: Difference Between Joy and Happiness, Connecting with Pharaoh, Holding Tired Hands High, Rollercoaster, Coffee Will Stunt Your Growth, and The Rubik’s Cube Gospel.

#2 AM I A “REAL” MAN – March 27, 2008

I have no problem making fun of myself. In fact, I think it is pretty stinkin’ funny. I try not to take myself or this blog too seriously so I like to occasionally point out my many imperfections, embarrassments, quirks, and funny life moments. Here are some posts that fit this category that missed the cut: Working with the Deck Stacked Against You, Stacked Deck Continued, Confessions from a OCD Minister, Results from the Fall, Guilty Pleasures, and Confession Time.

#1 CAN WE PLEASE START TO SET TRENDS? – October 28, 2008

No extravagant words for this one. This one simply is my favorite blog post of 2008.

escalatorIf life is a river, then pursuing Christ requires swimming upstream. When we stop swimming, or actively following Him, we automatically begin to be swept downstream.

Or, to use another metaphor more familiar to city people, we are on a never-ending downward escalator. In order to grow, we have to turn around and sprint up the escalator, putting up with the perturbed looks from everyone else who is gradually moving downward.

I believe that much of the American churchgoing population, while not specifically swimming downstream, is slowly floating away from Christ. It isn’t a conscious choice, but it is nonetheless happening because little in their lives propels them towards Christ.

reflection

Yesterday the weather was absolutely gorgeous. In response to God’s wonderful weather creation, I decided to break my routine and run outside yesterday (normally I only run outside on my weekly long run and during the week I run my smaller runs on treadmills or elliptical machines to help my knees and ankles). I ended up running four miles around a track that surrounds a beautiful lake.

In that moment, it was just me and the Father. No iPod. No distractions. Just me and God.

While “hanging out” with God, one prayer kept running through my mind – “Lord, make me like water.”

Remember that the weather was gorgeous. There were no clouds in the sky and the sun was shining brightly. Not only was the sun shining brightly in the sky, the reflection of the sun was shining just as brightly off the water. It was as if the water was a mirror that was reflecting the beauty of the sun. If I would have never been taught that the sky was up and that water was down, I would not have been able to tell which one was the real thing and which one was the reflection. Trying to find a picture on the Internet that captured this beauty was virtually impossible.

In that moment my prayer was…

Lord, make me like water. Like this water is so beautifully and fully reflecting the sun, help me to beautifully and fully reflect your Son – Jesus. When people see me, I want them to see your Son through me. May more people know you and may you become more famous because of your Son reflecting through my life. More of you; less of me.

May that be our prayer today - “Lord, make me like water.”

I wanted to take a minute out of this awesome day just to tell you Merry Christmas. Have a great day. Enjoy life. Enjoy family and friends. Eat some unhealthy food. Do something nice for a stranger. Remember Jesus and try to live like him. Thanks for reading the blog. I appreciate you more than you know.

Here’s the most beautiful Christmas song of all time…

“O Holy Night” by Shane & Shane

I have been getting an obscene amount of junk spam emails lately. However, the unique part of this situation is that my inbox is turning into the Internet’s version of Noah’s Ark because I am getting all these junk spam emails in pairs of two. Yes, I will get the same crap emails (Unused Timeshares, Free Credit Scores, Shamwow, Erectile Disfunction, just to name a few…) not once, but twice. Anybody else having these problems?

The real question is how are all these junk spam email people getting my email address?

As a Yankees fan, I welcome CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, and any other hard-throwing pitcher with initials for a first name with open arms. Welcome to the Bronx.

Congratulations to the Tennessee Titans for defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers this past weekend. The victory improved the Titans’ record to an impressive 13-2 (best in the NFL). The victory also clinched number one seed in the AFC and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Hey, Texas-people, how did the Cowboys do?

I’m sorry…that’s just mean…

For accountability sake I am going to tell you what I am reading right now. I just finished a deliberately slow read of Acts. I really wanted to soak in and try to experience the early church. What it looked like, what it smelled like, what it felt like. This week I am reading James. I also plan on finishing at least one book during my time away from the office for the holidays.

I won my fantasy football league. (Fun Fact: According to WikiAnswers.com, 30 million people fantasy football online.) The Annexation of Puerto Rico (yes, my fantasy football team name is named after the play that won the final game in the 1994 classic Little Giants) brought the championship back to the Cromer home. How did you do in your league?

My family is coming to Sulphur Springs for Christmas. They start to all arrive tomorrow. Heather and I are extremely excited. A grand total of 15 people will be here. Family, friends, food, and Christmas = good times.

Tis the season of sitting around the house bored out of your mind. Watching the cornucopia of Christmas movies is a great way to pass the time and escape reality. I wanted to make your holiday entertainment viewing a little easier by giving you my top five Christmas movies of all time. Grab some eggnog, light a fire in the fireplace, go to Blockbuster, rent these movies, and have a great, entertaining Christmas…

ernest15 – ERNEST SAVES CHRISTMAS. I remember watching this 1988 classic in a Memphis movie theater. This movie is often (and I can’t understand why) left off most top Christmas movie lists. When Santa is in some serious trouble and Christmas needs saving, who does humanity turn towards? The great Ernest P. Worrel. Ernest Saves Christmas is arguably the best Ernest movie (along with Ernest Goes to Camp and Ernest Goes to Jail) and is a great Christmas movie.

die-hard4 – DIE HARD. Another awesome Christmas movie from 1988. Because of the incredible-ness of this movie, people often forget that it is a Christmas movie (along with its sequel Die Hard 2). This 80′s action classic is not your traditional Christmas movie with Santa, presents, and reindeer. However, Die Hard is full of one-liners, killing, and a shoeless hero who saves the day. You don’t get much better than that. Also, John McClain is on my Top 10 Fictional Characters of All-Time list.

christmas-story3 – A CHRISTMAS STORY. I’m sorry. No top Christmas movies of all-time list is not complete without A Christmas Story on it. Moviefone’s list has it ranked number one. This movie, originally released in 1983, tells the story of Ralphie’s quest to obtain the Christmas present of his dreams, a Red Rider B.B. Gun. TBS for the past few years have shown this Christmas classic for 24 straight hours on Christmas day. So if you have somehow missed this movie, get cable.

home-alone2 – HOME ALONE. Heather and I have watched this movie already a couple of times this holiday season. I finally jumped out of the 1980s with this one, but just barely. This movie was released in 1990 and instantly became a classic. Sure the cute, non-jacked up Macaulay Culkin is good, but Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern take this movie to another level as the “Wet Bandits.” This is one of those movies that makes me laugh every time I see it. Good story too.

elf_poster11. ELF. In my opinion, this movie is the best Christmas movie of all-time. I am a big fan of Will Ferrell. I have seen the majority of his movies. I believe that this is the funniest character he has ever played. His expressions and reactions as a grown man who really thinks he is an elf are (as weird as this sounds) extremely believable. Be careful drinking while watching this movie because Elf has so many hilarious parts that you could possibly make your drink come out of your nose.

Today the Sulphur Springs Wildcats will be playing in the 4A Texas state championship game this afternoon in San Antonio. This is Sulphur Springs High School’s first trip to the state finals. It is also the first time that a school and community that I am connected to has made it this far in the football postseason. Good luck today, Wildcats!

ESPN’s Sportscenter commercials are some of my favorite commercials of all time. These commercials have become a big part of today’s popular culture. You can go to YouTube and see a bunch of them. I wanted to share a few of these hilarious commercials that happen to be my favorites. I will go Olympic-style and have my bronze, silver, and gold medal winners. But first…

genius-bar

My iPhone broke last week. While turning my phone on vibrate before a meeting, the gear that controls the vibrate feature malfunctioned. I did not drop the phone nor did I throw the phone against a wall; that feature just stopped working.

In the past I have had some major inconveniences and financial strains when cell phones have broken. Nervous that I was about to take a significant financial hit 10 days away from Christmas, I dialed the 1-800 Apple customer service number. The customer service representative suggested that I take my phone to the “Genius Bar” at an area Apple Store. He found the closest Apple Store for me and set up an appointment for me with one of their techs.

I made the trek to Dallas to the closest Apple Store. On a Thursday afternoon, the store was absolutely slammed full of people. I had a feeling deep in my gut that this venture was going to take all day. However, my consumer pessimism was wrong. Within minutes my name was called and I got to speak to one of the techs about my iPhone problem.

Without hesitation, the guy took my broken iPhone and gave me a brand new one. I was out of the Apple Store within 15 minutes and it cost me $0. I am a huge fan of the “Genius Bar.”

Yet another reason why I love Apple
