Oh, the first day of school! The memories come flooding back to me as I sit in my office thinking about what so many students and teachers are going through today (today is the first day of school in Sulphur Springs). This old man still remembers the anxiousness, nervousness, and excitement that came along with the first day of school.

I know from all the people who read this blog, we must have some amazing first day of school stories. For some of you, you might have to dive pretty deep into the ole’ memory bank, but I believe those stories are there. So…

Do you have any good first day of school stories? Do you have any funny first day of school stories? Do you have any embarrassing first day of school stories? Please share.

I remember my first day of kindergarten like it was yesterday. I was the baby of the family (at the time) and was very spoiled. Mom walked me to class all decked out in my new clothes and awesome new “had to have” book bag. Before she left I realized I didn’t have a lunch. Mom convinced me that it would be really cool to get a “hot lunch.” Thats what all the big kids do. It took a lot of convincing as I was an EXTREMELY picky eater. Come lunch time, I went through the line and was horrified by the junk they were slapping on my tray. Ok, it was a hamburger, but it just didn’t look right and it certainly didn’t smell like “home burgers.” I was herded to my table where I sat and cried without taking one bite of the burger. The lunch lady insisted I take it home with me to show my mom that i DID NOT eat lunch. I wrapped it up and stuck it in my NEW BOOK BAG to take home. Being the “pleaser” that I am, I did not want to let my mom know that the hot lunch thing did not work out so well, so I stuffed my bag in the back of my closet. It took about 2 mths for the smell to be overwhelming and my mom discovered the “LOST” school bag and the hidden hamburger.
I NEVER bought lunch at school, EVER again through my whole school career! This is one reason why the whole CHINA cafeteria experience was horrifying to me. It went way beyond the hamburger and crossed over to chicken feet and lips and had me wishing for kindergarten burgers again.

It wasn’t that I had an amazing “experience” today on the first day of school. It was the excitement and they joy on people’s faces when they came running my way. It made me feel overwhelmed because this year is the FIRST year that I went BACK to the SAME school since my 7th or 8th grade year. CRAZY huh?

    Love ya, BC

Janene – Great story. I could smell the bag through the internet.

    Leslie – Thanks so much.

Mack – That is great. I am so happy for you. Feeling loved and that you belong is awesome.

Em – That is what every youth minister wants to hear from his kids. That made my day.

I don’t remember MY first day of 1st grade (people my age didn’t go to kindergarten), but I remember my first school and my first grade teacher, Mrs. Prince, in La Feria, Texas. She is the only teacher I can remember by name. She was awesome!!! BUT, I can remember the first day of kindergarten of a certain brown-eyed, brown-haired 5 year old cutie in Bolivar, Tennessee. My BABY was going to school and, like most moms, it was hard to let you go. Moms have to “let their babies go”, many more times–middle school, high school, college, mission trips, getting married, moving FAR AWAY–it never really gets easy. We just put you in God’s hands and know that He will take care of you. Just some “mom thoughts”.
