Olympics – Do You Care?

Posted: August 9, 2008 in Life, People, Sports, TV

Yesterday was the Opening Ceremonies for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. It was the official start of the Olympics.

I was watching Rome Is Burning, hosted by Jim Rome, yesterday (a show I normally cannot stand to watch). He boldly spoke for Americans by saying that we do not care about the Olympics anymore.  He stated the Olympic games are not a big deal anymore like in the past and that nobody will actually watch the Olympics this year.  He said that besides the USA men’s basketball team and Michael Phelps, nobody will actually care. Rome stated that caring about the Olympics is a thing of the past.

So what do you think? Do you care about the Olympics?  Will you actually make time to watch the Olympic games? What are you looking forward to most about the Olympics?

Well I know we will. I don’t know if I was watching the same thing, but on one of the sports channels they were talking about how the USA doesn’t care about presentation of the Olympics, like Salt Lake City. They said it wasn’t as big of a deal as China thinks it to be. The Chinese believe that the success of the Olympics reflects well of their country, the USA wasn’t really worried about it when we hosted them in Salt Lake City. Just saying. But personally, I think people enjoy watching the Olympics, but when we watch it may not necessarily be that we want our country to win everything, because we want the best athlete, who performs the best to win because they trained and practiced so hard.

Hey B. Well Joe and I are watching right now. The opening ceremonies was awesome. For us it awesome to see all the different countries and the people walking the platform. He is looking forward to see the gymnastics and I just like to see it all. Of course we want USA to win…but may the best man win.

I will watch a lot of the Olympics–I especially like swimming, diving, gymnastics, basketball, most of the “high profile” sports. I thought the opening ceremonies were INCREDIBLE, the best I’ve ever seen!!! I was spellbound the entire time (even for the parade of nations). I love Chinese history (their present condition is sad), and hope their future is much better. Their children are ADORABLE, especially that little boy who walked in with Yao Ming, the 7’5” basketball player from China (who plays with Houston). I love that Manu and Dirk are playing with their home country’s basketball teams. I have to admit, I probably won’t watch badmitton, fencing, and other “low profile” sports. I know if you were on the badmitton team from the USA, I would watch (no matter what time it was on), but if you were on the badmitton team, we would be in China to cheer you on. I wish the world would take what the Olympics represent and apply it to how they deal with the other countries every day. But we can watch the best athletes compete and show their country’s pride for the next 2+ weeks. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

UPDATE: Only 14 hours afters after the Opening Ceremonies ended and I have already watched the following sports so far: equestrian, fencing, beach volleyball, indoor volleyball, swimming, soccer, handball, basketball, cycling, rowing, boxing, and badminton.

    I love it!!!

I will probably only watch Track and some highlights of LeBronze and the rest of the hoops team. It just not what it used to be.

Add football and mma then I will watch

I love the Olympics! I am currently taking a Hisory class right now at the tech center and we just got done studying the world wars. It is so refreshing after hearing about those times, to turn on the t.v. and see so many nations competing and interacting with each other peacfully. I think that the Olympics are proof that we can all live together and work together in this world to make it a better place. It does my heart good to watch the game and I always feel a swelling pride for my beloved country! Go U.S.A.!!!

  7. Jon L says:

Brian, you should know that I will be glued to the Olympics. I feel bad for my TiVo because it will not stop over the next 3 weeks. I am even recording the events that are being broadcast on Telemundo.
As of now, I have watched about the same as you: badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing (boring), cycling, equestrian, fencing, judo, rowing, shooting, soccer, swimming, volleyball, and weightlifting. I am excited to watch some handball and water polo soon.
As for the question, do I care, my answer would be yes. This is a chance for a collaboration of the world’s elite athletes to set aside worldly differences and compete in a friendly environment for the glory of their countries. Could it get any better?

  9. briancromer says:

Faith – it was awesome. You did a great job. Love you too.

  10. Kevin says:

I don’t care about the Olympics one bit. Sporting events are the most boring things on the planet. Who cares if someone can run faster, jump higher than someone else? I don’t.

  11. Faith says:

but yeah i watch the olympics their awesome

  12. Julie B says:

We are absolutely watching!! Opening ceremonies blew me away…it was such a masterpiece. Our Tivo has not stopped since Friday night. Of course we always love the high profile sports like swimming, diving, gymnastics, vollyeball, etc. But what I find interesting is learning about sports I don’t normally care about like fencing. Even my boys thought it was really cool. The athletes have put so much into training. Even when I don’t understand the rules of the sport they are competing in…I am in awe of their abilities. There is so much on TV that is terrible…I love that for 17 days there is something on that I can freely allow my kids to watch and not have to worry about censoring it.

  13. brittany says:

I’m watching the Olympics right now….Woot!

  14. brittany says:

and yes, you can watch TV and leave comments at the same time….its skill…

  15. Heather says:

Men’s and women’s gymnastics are my favorite event, but I really want the Redeem team to win the gold.

  16. Faith says:

I agree with you heather i love watching the men’s and woman’s gymnastics and yeah i do want the redeem team to win the gold. but we’ll see!

  17. sarahlife says:

Women’s gymnastics, beach volleyball, diving, swimming water pollo (Soccer in the water, according to Kennedy)! Watching the atheletes’ stories, (All the atheletes!), tend to muddy up my patriotism a bit. All of those men and women world-wide have worked all their lives to be there, it’s hard to favor just America.

  18. KYLE B. says:

uhh i probably will only watch volleyball, and gymnastics…those are the only ones that can hold on to my attention!!! :)
