Worshiping with the Homeless

While in Oklahoma City, we had the opportunity to connect and serve with a homeless shelter called CITY RESCUE MISSION.  One of the highlights from working with CITY RESCUE MISSION was when we had the opportunity to join them in their daily morning devotional one day.

As we drove there that morning I was expecting to walk into a small chapel with a few people hearing a daily devotional thought. Let me put it this way: I was completely wrong.

We walked into a gym full of homeless people who live at the shelter. Our entire group dispersed ourselves though out the crowd. Worship began and immediately I knew God’s presence had discended on that room. We worshiped together as one church and it was a powerful moment.

I loved the fact that in that moment, there was no “homeless person” or “person that had a home.” All walls were immediately broken in God’s presence. There was no rich, no poor, those that had, or those that had not. We were all equal before God as broken people, desperate for God’s saving grace. It was a beautiful moment that I hope to remember for a long time.

Thank you God for being a god that breaks down so many walls. You are so good.

Have you ever been somewhere you have seen God breakdown walls? It could be walls of culture, religion, traditions, language, and much more. I would love to hear those stories.

i felt the exact same way. when i found a place on a row, there was a lady beside me who seemed kinda to herself. like shy or hiden. when we sat down for the devo, she got her bible out and when she sat her bag under her chair, she spilt her coffee. she went and got some paper towls and quickly cleaned up. she then appoligized and said that usually she just strows her things everywhere. later that day, Sabrina took me and Colin to the clothing shelter and i learned that she, Linda, was the clothing superviser. at that very moment i knew that God had sent me for a reason. not only was she living at the shelter, she was one of the BridgeToLife workers. as i mentioned at group devos that night, Linda was stressed at the ladies dying to get in there and get some clothes. when Linda started to explain to colin and me what she needed us to do, i felt like God was there and that we would finish by His will. she said that God had blessed her by sending us to do the work that was needed but that she didn’t have the time to get around to.

    I praise God.

Tori said that was a one of the most memorable moments she had…she said that it so awesome that when she looked at them it was not at what they looked like but what they needed…which was God in the lives….and how everyone came together in song. She would not stop talking about it.
