Scotty P Words of Wisdom

Posted: June 13, 2008 in Friends, Funny, Life, People

The past couple of days I have not been feeling pretty well. My throat has been extremely sore and I have felt a lot of fatigue. It makes it harder because I am at church camp and I want to feel better. So what did I do today to feel better? Did I take a nap during free time to re-energize and re-fuel the body? Nope. Did I go to the doctor to get the right medicine to fix me up quickly? No way. I decided the best thing for me to do was to go to the weight room and lift, followed by going on a 3+ mile run. The goal was to sweat out all the disease and sickness.

That reminded me of one of my best friends and college roommate, Scott Pittman. Scott is one of those guys that seems to have a saying for any situation. He had three remedies for physical aliments (such as sickness and injuries):

  1. WALK IT OFF.
  2. SHAKE IT OFF.
  3. RUB SOME DIRT IN IT.

If sweating it off does not work by tomorrow, I am finding me a huge pile of dirt.

can’t think of any home remedies or tricks, but this did make think of some other Scotty P sayings. i learned everything I needed to know about dating and boys from his wise words:) very spiritual and practical.

“Garbage In, Garbage Out” and “Stay Vertical” are some of my favs.

If your nose is running, then snort warm salt water up it. It will wake you up if nothing else.
Learned that one from a cowboy in Moran, TX.

growing up hispanic….rub vicks on your chest and breath in deep…and of course moms fideo..(mexican soup)..which by the way Tori has mastered..

Here’s “The Mom” suggestions (remember I used to be a nurse, too). If your nose is stopped up (and you can’t breath), try Sudafed (generic is OK). You can also get generic saline nose drops and use them (they’re much better for you than Afrin or that type of nose drop). A hot, steamy shower might help. Using a Breath Right nose strip at night might help your nose stay open so you can sleep. If you nose starts dripping (or you have postnasal drip), take an antihistamine, like Zyrtec, Claritin, or Benadryl (generics are OK). But be careful–some antihistamines make some people sleepy, so you don’t want to drive after taking one, esp. Benadryl (Claritin and Zyrtec are once a day, so take them at night). Tylenol, Aleve, or ibuprofen can help with the sore throat and any achy feelings you might have. Gargling often with very warm salt water can help the sore throat, so can taking throat lozenges that have lidocaine or benzocaine in them (I think Cepacol lozenges have that ingredient). Drink plenty of fluids (esp. water and juices–esp orange juice, for the vitamin C). And you needs lots of rest. I know that probably isn’t possible this week, but try to get at least a little rest. Your body will thank you. If you develop a cough, let me know. What about the infirmary at Lipscomb? Could you go see the nurse there? Sorry if this ran long–just the MOM in me kicking in. Get better. I love you.

I have got to get some of that, Teresa. Maybe you can influence Tori to make me some when I am back in town.
